Technology Smackdown! Blackboard vs. Moodle

Ding! Ding! Ding! Blackboard is the winner by TKO!!!!
I have now worked with BB and Moodle from both sides; teacher and student.
Blackboard is the clear winner. Yes, there are many buttons on Blackboard but they are uniform throughout the entire class pages. Moodle is all over the place. From the student side, Moodle has so many places to get lost in. Your home screen has five thousand things to look at and it seems like the teacher side is the same.
My favorite feature of the Teacher BB is seeing the grading system. I really enjoy seeing how others/other programs are run. My school currently uses SIS, which I believe many other schools use. I think online grade books are great because I can work from home work school. BB also lays it out very clean and simple. I think that when you are working with people that have many different levels of technological understanding, the simpler the better. Moodle confuses me, and I think myself to be technologically proficient.
Go Team Blackboard!

  1. Ashley-
I completly agree that Moodle is all over the place. I really felt kinda lost while I was playing in there. I didn't really know where to start. I think Blackboard is the choice for me... even if it is NOT free!

  2. See, I noticed the positives in Moodle being all over the place. I think overall it is a much more "modern looking" site, and a little more visually applealing to me. How odd is that?! Maybe it's the visual learner side of me. Blackboard is just so uniform and boring looking in my point of view... maybe it's just because I am on a kick of trying out new sites.

  3. I'm glad to hear you say that, Ashley. I thought Moodle is all over the place, too. Again, I think this is a newer version of Moodle than I have explored in the past, and I like it better now than I did over a year ago when I first looked at it. I know some teachers that use it a lot, and they really like it because it is free.

  4. I think that each system has a place...Moodle is cheap...and unorganized...I think if BB was less expensive everyone would have it!

  5. I think there is some consistency in always knowing how a layout is going to look and don't find that boring at. Especially when you can make your course look unique by color and button choices. I am really attracted to the modular layout and the labeled boxes make it very easy to know exactly where you are at.

  6. Fun post--love the title! We use SIS also, and I hated it at first, but now it doesn't bother me anymore.

  7. Ashley, I agree with you on the visual analysis of Moodle. It was all over the place. BUT, it is open source and here's the beauty of it... one can make it look however one wants :)

  8. I like you title. I think grading is one of the more time consuming aspects of being a teacher and blackboard clearly makes it easier. I agree with you.

  9. Your post made me laugh! Thank you! I love the way you write, so out in front and open. I wonder if you had more time to evaluate and get used to Moodle if you would change your mind, but I do agree with the uniformity making BB easier to use.
